Action film lovers don’t need much more than the words “Directed by David Leitch” to get them into a theater. The former stunt performer who helped launch the “John Wick” franchise has become one of Hollywood’s finest purveyors of blockbusters filled with meticulously crafted set pieces and crowd-pleasing humor. It’s a filmmaking brand that has allowed him to team up with the likes of Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling. And now, he’s assembled one of the biggest ensembles of his career for the new heist flick “How to Rob a Bank.
Leitch’s new film, written by Mark Bianculli and following a group of criminals who keep a close eye on their social media presence, stars Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz, Anna Sawai, Rhenzy Feliz, Pete Davidson, and John C. Reilly. The film, which dropped its first trailer on Tuesday, hits theaters this fall.
An official synopsis for the film reads: “A crew of social media-savvy bank robbers broadcasts their daring heists, unaware that their growing viral fame has put them in the crosshairs of a veteran FBI agent and a brilliant software engineer. Despite the unlikely duo closing in, the crime ring pushes past their limits, putting everything on the line for their beliefs – and their most ambitious heist yet.”
“How to Rob a Bank” is produced by Leitch, Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, Allan Mandelbaum, and Kelly McCormick, with Ben Ormand and Bianculli serving as executive producers.
“How to Rob a Bank” is the latest film to explore that tension between the secrecy of great bank robberies and the lack of privacy that the panopticon of social media provides. The 2025 SXSW hit “LifeHack” explored similar themes, demonstrating how one of Hollywood’s classic genres must continue to evolve. With a large slate of high-profile robbery movies currently in the works, including multiple continuations of the “Ocean’s 11” franchise and Michael B. Jordan’s “The Thomas Crown Affair” reboot, it will be a topic to watch in the coming years.
Amazon MGM Studios is set to release “How to Rob a Bank” exclusively in theaters in Friday, September 4 before it streams on Prime Video at a later date. Check out the trailer below.
