A decade has passed since Kenneth Longergan‘s last film, “Manchester by the Sea,” but the playwright and filmmaker appears ready to return to the big screen. Per Variety, Longergan has lined up a starry cast for his new film, currently titled “Tomorrow Is a Drag,” as Aubrey Plaza, Adam Driver, Vanessa Kirby, and Matthew Broderick are attached to star. The package has launched sales at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, with MK2 Films handling international sales and WME representing the film in North America
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but given Longergan’s track record and the pedigree of the cast, “Tomorrow Is a Drag” could well be a major cinematic event in the near future. A representative for Lonergan did not respond to IndieWire’s request for comment.
Lonergan rose to prominence as a playwright in the 1990s, with theatrical works like “This Is Our Youth,” “The Waverly Gallery,” and “Lobby Hero” earning attention for turning Gen X angst into high art with biting contemporary prose. He has spent the 21st century alternating between theatre and film work, and has directed three films: 2000’s “You Can Count on Me,” 2011’s “Margaret,” and 2016’s “Manchester by the Sea.” He has also worked as a screenwriter on films like “Analyze This” and “Gangs of New York.”
The news comes immediately after Driver’s latest film, James Gray’s “Paper Tiger,” premiered to rave reviews at Cannes, with many critics calling it the best performance of the actor’s career.
“Irwin gives ‘Paper Tiger’ its shape, but it’s how Gary navigates those dilemmas that gives the film its soul,” IndieWire’s David Ehrlich wrote in his review. “Heartbreakingly portrayed by Adam Driver in a career-best performance that stretches across flash, menace, and pure sincerity like a foot stepping down on a bed of nails without drawing blood, Gary is a vintage ’80s showboat who only knows how to show affection by offering to share in his apparent success.”
Upcoming film credits for Plaza include Michael B. Jordan’s “The Thomas Crown Affair” and Zach Woods’ “The Accompanist.” She is also attached to star in “The Heidi Fleiss Story,” which will be co-written by Rachel Sennott.
