Tim Heidecker Future of Filmmaking Cannes Keynote — Watch

Tim Heidecker is the ultimate 2026 renaissance man. The multi-hyphenate comedy and music star, who launched his career with the influential Adult Swim sketch show “Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show Great Job,” currently has a project in just about every medium imaginable. In between acting roles like Quentin Dupieux’s “Full Phil,” which brought him to Cannes this year, he co-writes and stars in his ongoing movie review soap opera “On Cinema at the Cinema” with Gregg Turkington, hosts the “Office Hours” podcast, and regularly records and tours as a musician under the moniker Tim Heidecker and the Very Good Band.

And that was all before he took on the task of revamping the InfoWars brand. He’s set to serve as creative director of the disgraced conspiracy news site once The Onion’s acquisition goes through, turning what was once a source of hate and misinformation into a hub for comedy.

So there was plenty to talk about when Heidecker sat down with IndieWire Editor-in-Chief Dana Harris-Bridson at The American Pavilion at Cannes for this year’s Future of Filmmaking Keynote, presented by United for Business. The conversation began with Heidecker’s unique knack for playing characters who are often wrong but never in doubt, using his furious conviction to make ridiculously absurd points in a way that sometimes depressingly mirrors reality.

“There’s a certain amount of reality-building that’s important in comedy for you to believe that these people exist,” Heidecker said.

That blend of conviction and (fictional) insanity made him a natural fit to take over InfoWars. He explained the origins of his involvement with the project, saying that The Onion tasked him with developing a voice for InfoWars outside its distinct brand of newspaper parody.

“The Onion is such a precious comedy voice, it’s very specific,” he said. “And so they wanted someone like me to come in and allow them to do something outside the voice of The Onion.”

While much of the early promotion for the project involves Heidecker doing his spot-on Alex Jones impression, he explained that exclusively lampooning an increasingly irrelevant man is not a path to building a long-lasting comedy institution. Instead, he plans to turn InfoWars into the kind of broader comedy brand that platformed him early in his career.

“I think most satire gets old pretty quickly, and we don’t want to keep fueling [Jones],” Heidecker said. “So the plan is to goof on him for a few months, and have fun with it, and then transition the site into a comedy streaming platform for people that he would hate to see have success.”

He expressed that his ultimate hope would be for his InfoWars to play the kind of role in the comedy ecosystem that Adult Swim and Comedy Central once did, allowing comedians from all backgrounds to experiment and create their first big projects.

“We’re starting like Adult Swim era 2006. All these great basic cable platforms stopped making stuff. Or they stopped taking big swings or trying new voices, experimental shows. It all just moved to Instagram or TikTok. All these very talented young people are just twisting in the wind,” he said. “When I was coming up, there was a guy at Adult Swim, Mike Lazzo, who had a very strong sensibility and a sense of what he thought was funny, and he had a good team with him They brought up a lot of voices, a lot of individual artists who are now doing great things. And we hope it’s a little bit of that.”
