The street style looks were plentiful, including fresh takes on ensembles perfect for everyday, anchored by wardrobe classics and transitional outerwear staples—such as Zoë Kravitz’s satin trench coat and trousers or Gigi Hadid’s distressed leather jacket and jeans. The espresso was also reasonably underwhelming, and Cozens admitted that “none of the espressos are perfect, but the TK-02 has a good balance, and pleasant taste, but lacks intensity and feels a little weak.” Hunt seconded this: “I just haven’t got enough strength or flavor coming through on it. I haven’t got the bitterness, it’s just not really doing much in terms of flavor and as such is bottom of my list.”

Jura E8

Despite premium pricing, impressive features, and reputation, the Jura out of the box did not find favor with our professional tasters. Hunt was quick to point out that the “milk tasted too hot, and so has almost ruined the espresso. There’s too much foam on top to be a latte, too—it’s more of a cappuccino.” Cozens appreciated the look of the milk and the layering of the espresso, but was also quick to mention the milk’s high temperature, which felt “hotter than the 65 to 66 degrees Celcius needed by a barista.”

Both Cozens and Hunt were also surprised to discover their least favorite espresso came from the Jura E8. “This is a classic under‑extraction,” Cozens says. “It’s quite a salty, sour taste that’s often described in the industry as tasting a bit seaweedy.” Hunt also called out the espresso’s acidity and thought it was also “on the under‑extracted side, for sure.”

De’Longhi Eletta Explore

The De’Longhi latte was by far the prettiest of the four, and the milk made a good impression on both Cozens and Hunt. “It’s quite hot [like the Jura], but I think the microfoam is the best, helping to give the latte a little more of that signature sweetness,” Cozens says, while Hunt noted the “milk is the best we’ve had, although there’s more foam than I’d usually expect out of a latte.”

When considering the flavor, Cozens was pleased he could taste “a little bit more of the chocolatey flavor coming through, which I’d expect from the Brazilian Forest Blend. It’s got a good nutty flavor, but, because of the amount of milk, it is a little sweeter than the others [Terra Kaffe and Philips].”

The espresso tasting was more polarizing for our pros, with Cozens disliking it and Hunt enjoying the extraction. “There’s a reasonable amount of coffee flavor coming through,” Cozens says, “but it’s got a sharpness to it, which you shouldn’t experience with the Forest Blend. It’s a little sour.” Contrary to his boss, Hunt enjoyed the shot. “I can really taste the nuttiness of our beans on this, and while it’s a close call [with Philips], if I were buying on espresso alone, this is the one I’d choose.”

Philips Café Aromis 8000

Despite not being a brand typically associated with coffee, Philips’ Café Aromis came out on top with both the latte and espresso. This is especially impressive considering it has the lowest MSRP of the lot and given how “different” the latte looked, with, as Hunt noted, “a brown foam on top that suggests the milk was poured differently” than the rest. But when it came to the taste, he was impressed. “I have the chocolate-nutty taste I’m looking for in here, and there’s a bit more coffee coming through, with the right level of sweetness. It’s an enjoyable latte, with the coffee and milk blended really nicely.”

Cozens wasn’t quite as effusive, but he did appreciate the “coffee-forward” nature of the drink, although there was a little bitterness. “I’ve enjoyed latte C [De’Longhi] the most, but D [Philips] has more coffee flavor.”

Jaffer believes the idea of home resonates with particular urgency today, in a world marked by fractured identities, constant movement, and digital omnipresence. The pandemic, he noted, transformed how people live and work, while technology has made it possible to sustain relationships across continents in ways unimaginable even a decade ago. Against this backdrop, the pavilion explores what it means to belong in an ever-evolving world. The featured artists come from vastly different regions of India, reflecting the country’s extraordinary cultural and geographic diversity. “India is more of a civilization than a single culture,” he remarked.

The selection process “began intuitively” with artist Sumakshi Singh, whose family home in New Delhi was demolished to make way for a larger building. In response, she recreated the house in grand scale, through thread and hand embroidery; a decision inspired by her grandmother’s passion for needle craft. From there, the pavilion expanded outward: Alwar Balasubramaniam explored fractured and traumatized soil in Tamil Nadu; Ranjani Shettar suspended delicate floral forms that evoke weightless gardens; Asim Waqif worked with bamboo scaffolding as a metaphor for rebuilding and imagining future homes; and young Ladakhi artist Skarma Sonam Tashi reflected on how new construction methods are transforming indigenous Himalayan architecture and community life. Despite their distinct visual languages, the works share a strong sense of harmony, as well as enchantment and whimsy.

The pavilion opening was celebrated with a lavish Indian soirée at the magnificent Scuola Grande della Misericordia—one of those Venetian landmarks where grandeur is accumulated over centuries. Beneath soaring ceilings and frescoes, guests drifted through an evening of cocktails and live music by candle light: it was Indian hospitality at its most magical. Venetian opulence and an Indian flair for rich decoration met to form a dialogue between two cultures that understand embellishment not as ornament, but as structure. It is a language few navigate with the same fluency as Isha Ambani, who hosted the reception, attended also by her mother, Nita Ambani.

Fresh from New York, where she made her Met Gala red carpet debut in a gold-thread-woven sari by Gaurav Gupta—its bodice set with over two hundred old-mine cut diamonds from the Ambani family collection—this time around, she greeted guests clad in a draped and bejeweled deep-red Chanel Haute Couture gown from Spring Summer 1989, before later changing into a glamorous Schiaparelli Couture creation for the after-party.

A conversation between past and present couture histories, the well-curated choreography of wardrobes hinted at Ambani’s role in shaping the vision behind the India Pavilion. Working closely with Jaffer, she helped bridge the commitment to cultural preservation with a contemporary perspective on Indian craftsmanship. “These artists express the importance of remaining conscious of the past, not through nostalgia, but as a testament to our shared heritage,” Ambani noted.

For her, the idea of home is inseparable from culture itself. “Home to me has always been important,” she explained. “Craft is alive, vibrant, and perhaps more important than ever in today’s increasingly digital and technological world.” That dedication extends into her work with the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, founded by her mother Nita Ambani. “Our mission is simple: to bring the best of India to the world and the best of the world to India,” she said. “Arts, crafts, and culture are essential in uniting people through a shared medium that transcends language.” Presented on one of the world’s largest contemporary art platforms, the pavilion becomes, in her words, both statement and responsibility. “I am very proud that we could present the work of these remarkable Indian artists here,” she said. “It is important to emphasize that the rapid evolution of our world, and especially the extraordinary development of our country, does not mean erasing the past, or the traditions that bring us together, or our sense of community and belonging.”

The Backbone One is as easy to recommend as it is to use. Slot the connector—either USB-C or Lightning—into your phone and stretch the controller over the back. The buttons and triggers are clicky and responsive, and the controller feels comfortable for hours-long gaming sessions without being too bulky. It also has pass-through charging, a screenshot or screen recording button, a mute button, and a headphone jack.

Part of what makes all Backbone controllers so great is the manufacturer’s software and additional features. The controller supports a number of gaming apps and services, and the companion app is fantastic (though not required). My favorite bit is the list of recommended games with controller support. You can also use the app to message and party chat with your friends, stream directly to Twitch, record and edit videos in 1080p at 60 frames per second, and more. Some of these features are locked behind a Backbone+ membership, which costs $40 per year. The subscription is nice, but you don’t need it to have a great experience. The controller is also available in some limited-edition styles or platform-dedicated versions like PlayStation Edition, but the differences are cosmetic.

The Backbone Pro expands on all of the features I loved about the Backbone One. The Pro is slightly chunkier, grippier, and more comfortable, and although my hands are small, I can imagine this is easier to hold for folks with larger hands. It has a quieter, more premium feel, and it still has the headphone port and pass-through charging capabilities of the One. The Pro feels just as ergonomic to me as a console controller, with no drawbacks or compromises. I liked the full-size joysticks, programmable back buttons, and Hall-effect rear triggers.

The Backbone Pro also has Bluetooth connectivity, which means you can use it with your phone, tablet, laptop, VR headset, and compatible smart TVs. You can connect to multiple devices simultaneously and switch between them with just a tap. If you’re serious about mobile gaming, or you want a comfortable controller that can swap between your devices seamlessly, I recommend the Backbone Pro. I think it’s worth snagging a carrying case like this one, though, to store it.

The Mcon controller from Ohsnap has some quirks, but its general concept is neat. The MagSafe controller attaches to the back of your iPhone or Android phone (a magnetic ring is included for Android users, though Ohsnap recommends using a MagSafe case). Press the Eject button to pop out your phone, almost like you would with an old-school T-Mobile Sidekick, and reveal the D-pad, joystick, and buttons below. You can also pop off the entire magnetic component and use the built-in kickstand to prop up your phone while controlling it with the separate controller half of the device. There are hand grips you can pull down and out for added stability if you’d rather have a more traditional design than playing with a rectangular controller. The Mcon pairs with your phone via Bluetooth and has minimal latency, with recessed thumbsticks and buttons that feel satisfying to press.

There are myriad Mcon accessories that are neat, like the Key Cast or Dock, which can charge your controller (via USB-C) and cast your phone screen to a monitor or TV. I could see this device especially coming in handy for travel, given its compact size that you can slip it in your pocket—which is not true for many of the controllers in this guide. It’s also a great option if you’d rather play on your phone but not while you’re holding your phone.
